Pain... For the scientist, it’s a neural response to minimize bodily harm… For the psychologist, it’s an emotional state triggered by external stimuli… For the sadist, it’s the joy of life… For the masochist, it’s the reason for living… But we all agree; pain is indeed painful…
But does it have to be? Isn’t it just another sensation? Isn’t it just another emotion? Can’t we dismiss pain the same way we dismiss a passing glance… Can’t we ignore it like we ignore a rickety door? Can’t we forget it like we forget an embarrassing moment?
Let us, for a moment think that we have mastered pain, does that make a person insensitive, does that make a person apathetic, is that person no longer human? But isn't it exactly what one man did 2500 years ago?

People DO have ways of dealing with pain, let's keep this simple.
Sometimes, pain is a facade, you don't give a shit (Note: exaggeration), what I mean is you don't care deeply enough to experience any deep pain. In other words, you are the master of pain in situations you dont give a shit about. (read : Strong person)
You escape pain, throw yourself at something else, much like immersing your hand in water when its burnt. In this case depending on how good you are at reconcentration of your energies, you might try extreme sports, workaholism, book-in-1-go, movie marathon. Getting piss drunk some may say falls into this category, but I would save it for the next.
You embrace pain, much like an old friend you meet after awhile.... you talk about it, you think about it, you analyze it from multiple perspectives (read : wallow in misery), and finally come to terms with it. Sounds like purgotary? Well, its preferable to eternal damnation.
I'm sure you can think of more, and you probably would use these in combination. I would suggest under extreme grief method (2) first and then switch to (3), its not too healthy to dwell on an event immediately after it happens, but all that is relative.
Finally, to answer your question on what makes a person apathetic or happy, the answer in a way is contained in method (1), but also, if you think about it your question itself serves out the answer, if you cannot grieve about a certain thing, if you have indeed reached that mental state, how would you be happy about certain other things, cos as we all know, being materialistic beings, there is no sweet without the sour....
To sum up, I had my personal view related to this on my blog, since all pain is born from need, check it out.
